For my work experience, I spent two weeks in the Arrabawn creamery laboratories. The reason as to why I chose to do this placement was because I have a huge interest in Science and I wanted to see what lab work would involve as a career. I started every day at 9.00 am and finished at 4pm or 3.20pm as I would on a normal school day. On the first day I was given a small tour around the labs and shown where the canteen and locker area were. I was given a lab coat and a Hi Vis jacket that I had to wear around the premises for safety as well as safety boots. The lab that I was in for the majority of my work experience was the Intake Lab, where milk samples were brought in and tested for many different things including antibiotics, fat and water content. My work involved testing milk samples for water percentage and later plotting the figures into excel. I also sorted out milk containers, removed labels and disinfected work surfaces whenever there were spills. I was shown the other tests that were being carried out and I got to spend one day in the Microbiological labs were more specialised tests are conducted e.g testing for bacteria such as Salmonella and Ecoli. The following week I spent two days doing paper work and then I got a day off the day school was closed. The highlight of my placement was definitely the first few days as they were very busy with a lot of milk lorries coming in and there was a lot of work to do. The people I worked with were very friendly and welcoming and I really enjoyed my time there! However, I found that lab work is not a career for me. It got quite repetitive after a while and It is just not something I would see myself doing for the long term. This is why I'm happy I chose to go for two weeks, as I liked lab work the first week but coming towards the end of the second one I knew that this just wasn't the place for me. I would recommend this placement to any student considering working in laboratories as it gives a really good insight into what the environment is like. It would also be a very good placement for students interested in Science as there is a lot of it involved!”

I chose to go to Anam Cara Therapy for one of my TY work experience placements as I was really interested in Science in particular psychology/ sociology. It was a week long placement which included two office days in the Treatment Room in the City North Hotel and three remote days working from home. On the remote days Mary “Em” Ryan the founder of the company Anam Cara Therapy would send us various tasks for us to complete each day. These tasks included writing blog posts on teenage mental health and our opinions, researching services for young people in the area and elements for the business. On the two office days we took part in various activities such as visiting local GP offices promoting the business, taking part in Random Act of Kindness Day by handing out chocolates and flowers to members of the public and finally my personal favourite we got the opportunity to experience a sound bath medication (which takes place every few weeks in local community centres) and film a promotional video. On the final day we got to meet with another psychotherapist for Lunch. I extremely enjoyed my work experience with Anam Cara therapy and I would highly recommend to anyone interested in social sciences, counseling or working with people in the future! For one of my placements for my work experience in Ty, I went to Anam Cara Therapy. It is located in the City North Hotel, in the treatment room. Mary “Em” Ryan is the founder of Anam Cara Therapy. It was a week long placement. I had 3 remote research days and 2 in office days. On the remote days, Em sent us research work to be completed and sent to her. This included things like writing blogs, researching mental health resources in Ireland and much more. During our in office days we got the opportunity to edit and publish our blogs to Em’s website, participate in wellness week by doing random acts of kindness for strangers, we filmed a video parody of a sound bath meditation and we also visited various doctors and clinics in the Drogheda area and even got the chance to meet with another therapist for lunch ! I thoroughly enjoyed my work experience with Anam Cara Therapy. I learned a lot about psychology and having a career in psychotherapy. I would highly recommend for anyone interested in psychology,sociology,science,counseling or anything related to such topics, to for sure get in contact with Em. You definitely will not regret it !”

HighTechElec TY Program

I was lucky enough to be able to participate in the HighTechElec program in Tyndall National Institute with about 20 other TY students. It was very well structured. On the first day we were in Tyndall and we had interesting presentations on micro-processors and computer chips. We had a "LittleBits Workshop" and a presentation about personal branding. Then we had a photonics workshop. On Tuesday we went to The Electrical & Electronic Engineering Building in UCC and we had an Arduino Workshop and a talk from the former Head of UCC Engineering. We went back to Tyndall and had an Energy Workshop and a talk about Business and Intellectual Property. On Wednesday we went to CIT and we got a tour of the NImbus Centre. We got to see a interactive table for primary schools called "TipTapTap". We then got a talk from the CIT Head of Engineering. On Thursday we got a work placement in a company. I went to DELLEMC in Ovens and joined a group of other TY students there for coding and hardware workshops. Finally on Friday we prepared for the TechnoDen competition; A competition where we had to come up with a product or service based on what we have seen during the week. Along with this competition we had presentations on Science Communication and a TIDA award talk. The group I was in came up with an idea involving water pressure and depth sensors. We managed to win 1st place which was great. Overall the HighTechElec Program was a great week of work experience. I met some new friends and really enjoyed the week.”
