Arrabawn Laboratories

Science
★★★★☆
For my work experience, I spent two weeks in the Arrabawn creamery laboratories. The reason as to why I chose to do this placement was because I have a huge interest in Science and I wanted to see what lab work would involve as a career. I started every day at 9.00 am and finished at 4pm or 3.20pm as I would on a normal school day. On the first day I was given a small tour around the labs and shown where the canteen and locker area were. I was given a lab coat and a Hi Vis jacket that I had to wear around the premises for safety as well as safety boots. The lab that I was in for the majority of my work experience was the Intake Lab, where milk samples were brought in and tested for many different things including antibiotics, fat and water content. My work involved testing milk samples for water percentage and later plotting the figures into excel. I also sorted out milk containers, removed labels and disinfected work surfaces whenever there were spills. I was shown the other tests that were being carried out and I got to spend one day in the Microbiological labs were more specialised tests are conducted e.g testing for bacteria such as Salmonella and Ecoli. The following week I spent two days doing paper work and then I got a day off the day school was closed. The highlight of my placement was definitely the first few days as they were very busy with a lot of milk lorries coming in and there was a lot of work to do. The people I worked with were very friendly and welcoming and I really enjoyed my time there! However, I found that lab work is not a career for me. It got quite repetitive after a while and It is just not something I would see myself doing for the long term. This is why I'm happy I chose to go for two weeks, as I liked lab work the first week but coming towards the end of the second one I knew that this just wasn't the place for me. I would recommend this placement to any student considering working in laboratories as it gives a really good insight into what the environment is like. It would also be a very good placement for students interested in Science as there is a lot of it involved!

I worked on a computer, checked baptismal certs and shredded all the old applications forms, I answered phones and pressed the buzzer to let people in. It was a 5 day period from Monday to Friday. My highlight in working there was work with the other workers there they were all kind and energetic. I would refer this to other students. It was fun at the same time even though I had to do work.

I did my work experience in St Joseph’s national school, just down the road from us !! We started every morning at 8:50 so it was normal time for us on the 10th - 14th of February. We finished up every day at around 2:30. I personally really enjoyed my week here. We started every morning with doing literacy lift off with the first class pupils and we went around and read them a story or else you supervised them on the iPads this went on for about an hour and a half and then we went for a break. Then in the middle of the day we went into the junior infants and did aster with them this was when the had different games sections in each of there groups and they’d rotate every day for example one group would be on play doe and there would be colouring and playing with dolls this went on for about an hour and then we helped them tidy up and then they’d usually do some maths after this so we helped them correct there homework for them we also played some fun games with them and we went dancing!! After this we would have our lunch. In the evenings we would go to the hall, the same week we were there they had these LEGO blocks rented out so a different class would be doing them everyday we would usually go down and help them we usually finished this up at around 2:30 and that would be our day done. Overall I really enjoyed this experience and I would definitely consider this career in the future

Anam Cara Therapy

Science
★★★★★
I chose to go to Anam Cara Therapy for one of my TY work experience placements as I was really interested in Science in particular psychology/ sociology. It was a week long placement which included two office days in the Treatment Room in the City North Hotel and three remote days working from home. On the remote days Mary “Em” Ryan the founder of the company Anam Cara Therapy would send us various tasks for us to complete each day. These tasks included writing blog posts on teenage mental health and our opinions, researching services for young people in the area and elements for the business. On the two office days we took part in various activities such as visiting local GP offices promoting the business, taking part in Random Act of Kindness Day by handing out chocolates and flowers to members of the public and finally my personal favourite we got the opportunity to experience a sound bath medication (which takes place every few weeks in local community centres) and film a promotional video. On the final day we got to meet with another psychotherapist for Lunch. I extremely enjoyed my work experience with Anam Cara therapy and I would highly recommend to anyone interested in social sciences, counseling or working with people in the future! The best way to get in touch with Em is by emailing anamcaratherapy@protonmail.com.

McCarthy & Crowley Accountants

Finance & Banking
★★★★☆
For my work experience, I went to McCarthy & Crowley Accountants for a week. I was curious to discover what it would be like to work in an office. I really enjoyed learning Business Studies at Junior Cert and I am considering to study this area at 3rd level. I was eager to gain an insight into the world of accountancy to figure out if a related career would suit me. After completing the work experience, I am still interested in Business but I found out that maybe working in an accountants wasn’t for me. I enjoyed carrying out the tasks, but some of them became repetitive and boring after a while. Examples of tasks were bank statements, cheques and spreadsheets. I have gained a lot from my work experience. My IT and communication skills have further developed. I was introduced to working with new programmes on the computer, for example Excel. I think IT skills are so important and the knowledge I have gained will benefit me in 3rd level. Communication skills are essential for any workplace and mine have further improved. It was my first time in a workplace and I was not afraid to ask questions about tasks. This will be important for any 3rd level institution or workplace. Based on the work experience, I came to the conclusion that sitting at an office all day wouldn’t be for me. I think I would be more interested in a job that is variable. However, I still really enjoyed the work experience there and am now considering a career in the business world.

For one of my placements for my work experience in Ty, I went to Anam Cara Therapy. It is located in the City North Hotel, in the treatment room. Mary “Em” Ryan is the founder of Anam Cara Therapy. It was a week long placement. I had 3 remote research days and 2 in office days. On the remote days, Em sent us research work to be completed and sent to her. This included things like writing blogs, researching mental health resources in Ireland and much more. During our in office days we got the opportunity to edit and publish our blogs to Em’s website, participate in wellness week by doing random acts of kindness for strangers, we filmed a video parody of a sound bath meditation and we also visited various doctors and clinics in the Drogheda area and even got the chance to meet with another therapist for lunch ! I thoroughly enjoyed my work experience with Anam Cara Therapy. I learned a lot about psychology and having a career in psychotherapy. I would highly recommend for anyone interested in psychology, sociology, science, counseling or anything related to such topics, to for sure get in contact with Em. You definitely will not regret it !

I went to Arup for a week and it was amazing! We were given a task throughout the week which was to design something and did cool activities like playing Monopoly Arup Edition and exploring buildings with a VR headset. we talked with different types of engineers (there were approximately 36 different types) who helped us with our tasks and talked to us about what their job is. After going here, it definitely changed my opinion of engineering for the better and I would highly recommend anyone to go there for work experience if becoming an engineer is something you want to do.

I worked at Gaelscoil Uí riada for 1 out of the 2 weeks. I am quite adept at Irish plus I went to Gaelscoil Uí Riada for 6 years prior to Spoiraid Naoimh so it was nice to go back to Gaelscoil Uí Riada after a 6 year hiatus. I was working from 8:50-2:30, so the days were nice and short. There weren't a lot of dislikes, mostly likes. For example, seeing my old teachers from the days of old was nice I suppose, I also got to use my Irish a lot so that was very nice as well as it further enhanced my Irish knowledge and skills. I would highly recommend going to Gaelscoil Uí Riada if you're looking for work experience, whether you're a past pupil or not and if you want to put your Irish skills to good use at the same time!

Waterstone's

Retail
★★★★★
My week at Waterstone's was extremely enjoyable. The quality of service and friendliness of the staff always enhances my visit, as a customer. My work experience placement was as pleasant. The week itself was arranged last minute and the staff were more than accommodating when I approached them. The work was very hands on. Working in a bookshop is no easy task. The staff there go out of their way to assist customers, even going to the trouble ringing publishers to order books if necessary. The amount of walking was huge- one could keep fit by just doing everyday work at Waterstone's! In my opinion, the work experience programme was very well structured. I had a different supervisor every day, and I therefore got a full experience of work undertaken there and of the retail industry. The work included: working on the tills; taking phone calls; shelving books; laying out fabric shelves; experiencing work in all of the different sections; alphabetising books; dealing with customers; labelling stuff; restocking merchandise and diaries etc.; ordering books from and returning books to publishers; laying out sales tables; making sure the different sections were up to standard; and learning about what goes on behind the scenes. Safe to say I had a very busy week! The highlight of my week was when the manager approached me at the end of the week and offered me work for the end of November and the month of December, as Christmas is their busiest time. Throughout the week I received staff discounts and was gifted a book on my departure on the Friday. My week at Waterstone's was my favourite week of work experience. I will definitely be going back there for part-time work in the future!

Scoil an Spioraid Naoimh

★★★☆☆
Since Scoil an Spioraid Naoimh was my own primary school, the staff were already familiar with me; but from an objective viewpoint they are all very nice and welcoming people, happy to help any student who wants to do work experience there. I did get some of the teaching experience that I signed up for. The experience was tailored to my own skills; for example, I am talented at art, so I was allowed to give two art lessons to a class. About half the time there was spent doing menial work, though, (correcting copies, sorting paperwork, etc.) and this lost its appeal very quickly. I was also working in the same Second Class group for the full week, so I didn't get a broad experience of all primary school year groups, which I think was a big disadvantage. Overall the experience provided some of what I hoped, but not all of it. It was enjoyable for the five days, but any longer and the enjoyment would have faded very, very rapidly.

I was lucky enough to be able to participate in the HighTechElec program in Tyndall National Institute with about 20 other TY students. It was very well structured. Then we had a photonics workshop. On Tuesday we went to The Electrical & Electronic Engineering Building in UCC and we had an Arduino Workshop and a talk from the former Head of UCC Engineering. We went back to Tyndall and had an Energy Workshop and a talk about Business and Intellectual Property. On Wednesday we went to CIT and we got a tour of the NImbus Centre. We got to see a interactive table for primary schools called "TipTapTap". We then got a talk from the CIT Head of Engineering. On Thursday we got a work placement in a company. I went to DELLEMC in Ovens and joined a group of other TY students there for coding and hardware workshops. Finally on Friday we prepared for the TechnoDen competition; A competition where we had to come up with a product or service based on what we have seen during the week. Along with this competition we had presentations on Science Communication and a TIDA award talk. The group I was in came up with an idea involving water pressure and depth sensors. We managed to win 1st place which was great. Overall the HighTechElec Program was a great week of work experience. I met some new friends and really enjoyed the week.

We managed to win 1st place which was great. Overall the HighTechElec Program was a great week of work experience. I met some new friends and really enjoyed the week.

I did a weeks work experience at EMC at Ovens. I was with a group of about ten and I got on well with everyone. My supervisors were nice and we got vouchers for free food. I learned all about EMC how they build their machines and the quality control process.
